Overview

Arrive has many years of cumulative expertise in both communication and silicon technology as applied to complete systems. Until recently, it was not possible to fit an entire major telecom system on a chip due to silicon size and performance constraints. It is now possible to put a complete system core on a single chip for some major CPE, access, edge and metro edge systems.

Core system technology is at an inflection point. Most successful systems in the access and metro markets were developed with technology that had its origins three to eight years ago and are at the end of their life cycle. These systems have many proprietary integrated circuits, combined with standard devices onto a board assembly. Due to the slowdown in the communication market, the emergence of the new Next-Gen Ethernet over SONET, GFP, VCAT and LCAS standards, and the reduction in sales and R&D spending, new development in this area has slowed considerably. This is despite the fact that the access/metro-edge markets are considered bottlenecks to existing and new broadband services which are entering a boom. As the wireless market explodes, the higher data bandwidths of EV-DO, CDMA2000, UMTS and WiMax are driving the need for Next-Gen SONET/SDH backhaul systems.

 

It is now possible to dramatically reduce the number of chips and cost of many of these systems. Only a few years ago, implementing a system similar to the AT4848, would have taken 5-10 or more chips, high power, significantly more size and the resulting $1000s in cost. That cost has simply been passed on too end users and has even given the wrong impression that SONET/SDH is a costly technology versus alternatives. The AT4848 with its competitive pricing should help dispel that historical cost inaccuracy. There is no significant cost penalty for SONET/SDH while it's widely deployed,  supports all legacy and current services with great efficiency, flexibility and comparable cost. The cost of a complete MSPP can be dramatically reduced and by integrating the ADM/MSPP into products like OLTs, DSLAMs, BDLCs and CPE, the entire ADM cost can be eliminated. The AT4848 makes these a practical reality today!
