SONET / SDH

SONET is a standard developed by Telcordia and ANSI for transferring data over optical fibers. SDH is a closely related ‘cousin’ to SONET developed in Europe by the ITU which differs in key details but whose fundamental purpose is the same as in SONET.

SONET/SDH can be thought of as a generic, all purpose data transport mechanism which can support many varied services such as PDH and ATM. SONET/SDH transport represents the largest worldwide installed base and offers a multitude of opportunities for the efficient transport of both legacy and next generation services.
